Why Is Reading Important?

According to research conducted by the National Child Institute of Reading and Human Development (http://www.nichd.nih.gov/), poor reading skills can have the following negative impacts on the lives of adolescents and adults alike.

• Of the 10 million children with reading difficulties, 10 to 15% eventually drop out of high school

• Among adolescents and young adults with criminal records about half have reading problems

 

• About 50% of young people with histories of substance abuse problems have reading difficulties

• Poor reading skills make it difficult for students to excel in other academic subjects such as science, social studies, and mathematics

• The inability to read well can make it difficult for adults to find employment in today's information driven economy

 

• Poor reading skills can also lead to poor self-esteem
